What is an internship? An internship is similar to a part-time job, but the focus of the job is not the work so much as it is where you will be learning new things--on the job training, if you will. The internship is meant to be a safe place for you to practice what you learned in class (and if you make a mistake, it doesn't mean getting fired!).
Why are internships important? Internships are VERY important primarily because it is likely the only experience on your resume that is related to your studies. The internship is meant to link together your education and your experience, and all while you are actually learning about the business you are about to enter!
Where should you do your internship? You should give considerable thought to where you want to intern. Often times, where you intern is where you land your first job in the industry. Some internships are very competitive, especially those with Fortune 500 companies. Figure out where early on and find out what it will take for you to land the job.
Who should you contact for an internship? Ask everyone you know that is in the industry you want to be in! Finding an internship is just like finding a job...the good ones are hard to find! Contact your Career Counselor to see what opportunities they posted in CareerZone. Network and reach out using sites like LinkedIn.
When should you do your internship? You can do as many internships as you like, but only one will count for credit. The required internship class is generally done just before you graduate.
How do they work? Internships are generally set for about 300 hours over 12 weeks (one quarter), which is about 25 hours a week. Most internships are unpaid, but require that you receive credit for your time.
