If You Have To Ask - You Don't Have It!!

I am sure we are all aware of the saying "if you have to ask how much it costs, you can't afford it".  The same holds true when it comes to skills on a job posting.  More often than not, I am asked what a particular system is, what a particular phrase means - how a certain requirement actually coincides with their skill set in spite of evidence to the contrary.

To make things easier moving forward, I have devised a short list of the most common "what is this - is this me?" queries to avoid confusion and speed along the search process.

1. C-Level Assistant:   while many of you have applied because "my grades are all A's and B's",  a C-level assistant actually means that he or she has worked for a "C" level in their history:  Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Administrative, Financial or Information Officer

2. Must Have SOX Experience:  while many of you have applied saying "who doesn't wear sox?" or "my many years in the fashion industry qualifies me...."  SOX actually refers to a 'compliance reform' (created by Paul Sarbanes and Michael Oxley) in response to accounting scandals like those affecting Enron, Tyco, etc.   It basically says "tell all to your investors or face the consequences".  If you have not worked in compliance, then you do not have SOX experience.

3. AS400; is a scripting language and while it is a 'system' it is best NOT to say "I have worked on AS400 my whole life"

4. Yes, they WILL SPEAK TO YOU in the language requested if you say you are bilingual.  Be ready.

I am a believer that while I may not be able to afford it, It might be on sale so why not ask??.   Ask me if you have a question about a posting before you apply or ignore it - who knows?

  1. this is true because some jobs wants you to have a certian amount of experience when applying for a position within there company. But, most of the times they dont't care as long as you have the main requirements

I don't know why these companies make it so hard for students that strive for the best and had invested their precious time to get an education to make a better life for oneself and their families, to get to the front door of some of these companies and give you the cold shoulder. I hope it gets better in the near future because apparently current status is not working.
