The fall season is a great time to reinvent your career and capitalize on networking opportunities through our great Career Fair! There is no magic formula for finding a job, but here are ways to enhance your odds at the Career Fair.
· Know the requirements for landing a job or internship in your given field by talking to the recruiters at the Fair and investigating your field of interest.
· Perfect your resume! Emphasize the skills and experience needed for your field or major.
· Have Career Services refine or proofread your resume to insure there are no mistakes.
· To learn more, try to arrange informational interviews with professionals in the field. If possible try to schedule interviews right at the Fair.
· Network, network, network! Students have often found jobs through the career fair that were not advertised because a recruiter was so impressed with their background or presentation.
· Be persistent but patient at the Fair. Check all the jobs and companies not just the ones that seem like a fit for your field.
· Don’t treat your introduction as an interrogation that you are fearful of. You are fortunate enough to have a chance to build rapport with a recruiter.
· Know the key employers you are interested in meeting and research them if possible before the Fair. If you see other companies you are interested in, there are Research Librarians standing by in the lobby to assist you with looking up key facts about a company.
· Make your first impression count!
· Practice your introduction out loud before the event! Anticipate the types of questions you might be asked and practice responding. If you lack experience do a mock interview prior to the event with Career Services.
· Be “On your Game” from the start. Make sure you are positive and focused as well as friendly and respectful.
· Leave your cell phone out of reach and turned off.
· Dress for Success! All attendees should wear professional, dark colored suits and conservative attire including dress shoes. Men should wear dress shirts and ties. Try to keep hair neat and men should be clean-shaven. If you need any assistance, contact Career Services!
