Taking Responsibility

Most Berkeley students don’t come in contact with the Career Services department until the Career Management Seminar a quarter before their final quarter. At that point, we talk about resumes, networking, internships and jobs. While all of this is important to know and understand, why are you waiting until we come to you? The people getting jobs in this economy aren’t getting them because they are lucky; they are getting them because they are being proactive and initiating their search. Here are some things you can do to jumpstart your job search.
1.       Visit Career Services: BEFORE you’re required to do an internship. We welcome all students from day one to come in and speak with us about what it is they are looking for.
2.       Come Prepared: Do not walk in the office and say “I need a job. What can I do with my degree?” As a college student, it’s your responsibility to understand your major and why you choose it. Do your research and come in with ideas and ask questions. This is a conversation, not an information session.
3.       Resume in Hand: Bring a copy of your most recent resume so we can review it together and make suggestions to better help guide you in the right direction.
4.       Act Professionally: Make an appointment with your correct counselor to have a discussion. If you walk in without an appointment, do not expect to be seen. If the counselor is free, they will meet with you, if not; kindly ask to make an appointment for a time when the counselor is free.
5.       Take Responsibility: We are here to help you, not do the work for you.  We will hold your hand and work hard to get you to where you want to be, however, you must do your share. Being an active participant in your job or internship is crucial to your success.
