Organizations and Networking

What’s the best way to get a job? Networking, networking, networking. Besides networking amongst your peers and professors at school, you can network through organizations.
The importance of joining organizations relative to your field can’t be stressed enough. In order to network amongst others in your field, you need to expand your circle of contacts by becoming a member of organizations that are relevant to your field. Memberships into an organization in your field will keep you in the loop of current events and expose you to new areas relative to your field. These events are a great place to learn more about your field of interest, as well as network with other members. Many times organizations have a membership guide which contains the contact information of all members. What a great way to locate people at companies you have always been interested in getting a foot in the door at. Locate these members and connect with them online on LinkedIn. Once you are connected to them, this opens up opportunity for discussion. Find out what events they will be going to so you can meet them in person and continue the networking there.
Once at a networking event, remember that you are there as a professional. Some tips to remember when at a networking event:
  • Be appropriately dressed for the event. This could mean business suit, jeans or tuxedo.
  • Don’t just talk about yourself. Remember to listen and ask questions to others. You are there to get to know them.
  • Bring business cards with you that reflect your field of interest and your area of expertise.
  • Remember to exchange business cards with those you meet. It’s a good idea to jot a note on the back of their card after they leave to help you remember who they are.
  • You’re not there for the open bar and buffet. Be mindful of your alcohol intake. Always keep one hand free to shake hands.
  • Remember basic manners.
  • Always introduce new people to each other.
  • Prepare for the event. Read up on current events in the world, and also in your field so you can jump into any conversation right away.
